Computers – Technology – Math – all so important to today's young child. Calvary Child Development Center has a state-of-the-art computer/math lab, including a SMART Board! Children in the 3s, 4s, TK, and Kindergarten attend classes in the lab every other week. The Computer/Math Teacher provides age-appropriate instruction and software that allow the children to work at their individual levels.
At the age of three the children are able to begin learning to control the computer mouse. Hand-eye coordination skills are just beginning to develop. . Threes enjoy coming to the computer/math lab!
As the children begin to turn four years old, their skills on the computer change significantly. The development of hand-eye coordination has gone through a rapid transformation. The computer is now a powerful tool that allows the children to problem solve and to use their higher level thinking skills to a maximum. The use of computers at this age attends to a variety of developmental skills. Current research indicates that children excel in the development of verbal and social skills when they use computers. This occurs when the children are allowed to provide feedback to one another while on the computers.
Transitional Kindergarteners and Kindergarteners explore many additional aspects of the computer such as learning to manipulate graphics and adding sounds and animated graphics to their work using age-appropriate software.
Math manipulative tables are loaded with activities to encourage the development of strong early math skills. This is a hands-on area of the room where the children can truly experience math. They are able to work on specific skills such as counting, visual perception, patterning, sorting, numeral recognition, puzzles, and measuring.
